Regina Rebels Coaching Staff – 2017-2018

Mike Merk – Head Coach
Mike accepts the position of the Head Coach role for the 2016/17 season.   He has coaching experience going back to 1995 when he started Merk’s Hockey School here in Regina.   Mike has coached in HRI since 1997.   He has also been a coach mentor for the past 3 years assisting coaches in the city for various levels from Initiation to Midget.  

As a player, Mike has had many successful experiences winning league title 3 years in a row in Bantam AA, two time Saskatchewan Midget AAA champion with Regina Pat Canadians where he was also a finalist and winner of the Air Canada Cup national championship.  Mike went to Yorkton Terriers following midget where he was runner up in league final his first year and again went to the Royal Bank national championship placing 3rd.   Mike has also been inducted into the Regina and Yorkton Sports Hall of Fames with Pat Canadians and Terriers.  

Mike has been a big part of the female program in Regina and was the founder of the female Grrrowl spring hockey program which many players in the area have had the experience of playing in.   He was a contributor to the successful revitalization of the female tournament held in Regina every December.

As a coach and father, Mike recognizes the need to provide an environment that these female athletes can develop their hockey skills while ensuring education comes first.   Mike and his coaching staff are looking forward to the opportunity and challenge of building on an already successful program. 

Brent Bobyck – Practice Coach
Brent played his minor in hockey in Regina and high school hockey at Notre Dame College in Wilcox, Saskatchewan. After a 4 year spell at Notre Dame along with a Midget AAA Air Canada Cup National Championship.

Brent then attended the University of North Dakota on a full scholarship and was drafted by the Montreal Canadians in the 4th round 78th pick overall.  While at the University North Dakota and playing for the Fighting Sioux he won a Division 1NCAA National Championship in 1987.

After a successful 4 years at the University of North Dakota Brent signed his first pro contract with Montreal Canadians and played for their AHL Fredericton Canadians. Brent also played for the Albany Choppers in the IHL and had spells with Charlotte Checkers, Detroit Falcons and 2 separate spells with the Canadian National Team.

In 1994 Brent was offered a contract to play in Europe with Peterborough Pirates. He spent 2 seasons there before moving on to play in the inaugural season of the UK Super-League with the Nottingham Panthers.

He spent the next 4 seasons there winning the Benson and Hedges Cup twice, and 2 Challenge Cups. 

Brent then moved to arch rivals Sheffield Steelers and played the next 5 years collecting silverware with the Steelers. During this time in Sheffield Brent won The Benson and Hedges Cup, 2 Challenge Cups and 2 playoff championships

Brent is a full time Power skating and skills coach and has taught power skating for over 10 years in Regina and around the province of Saskatchewan. 

Brent is official power skating coach for the Moose Jaw Warriors (WHL), Notre Dame Hounds and Martin Academy.  Brent has taught many players who made it to the NHL or have been drafted.

Corey Terry – Practice Coach
Corey brings vase experience in working with youth in sport.  Corey has a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education, a Bachelor of Education and a Masters of Education in Educational Administration.  Corey has worked as a physical education teacher and is certified in many different high school sports as well as a High Performance coach in hockey. 

Corey has had the unique opportunity to work as coach mentor within schools, hockey Regina and Saskatchewan Hockey Association (SHA).  Corey currently is a Lead Mentor for Hockey Regina where by his leadership has helped modernize a focus on skill development in our minor hockey programs.  Corey is also a SHA High Performance coach mentor and evaluator.

Corey has also been a coach of multisport since 1993 and a hockey coach since 1995.  Corey has coached all divisions in hockey from Initiation to Senior.  Corey has worked with many teams locally in HRI as well as the Sask First program for SHA.  Corey has also won provincial titles in track & field, volleyball and hockey.  Corey has also won a national title in volleyball as well.  Most recently, Corey has coached the Bantam AA Female Ravens and won back to back provincial titles and the first ever Ravens win of the South Sask Midget AA league Championship.  As a hockey player Corey has played minor to senior hockey and has experience in the SJHL and CIS.

Corey has been a coach in hockey Regina for the past 8 years and also works as an assistant coach for the University of Regina Cougars Men’s Team.  Corey is well known for his skill development focus and looks forward to bringing his skill set and passion to the Regina Rebels.
